Handling Setbacks


Whenever we try to achieve anything there will be setbacks. The best way to handle them is to plan ahead! Anticipate them and have a plan ready to go in order to bounce back quick. We can't always see them coming but we can always choose how we decide to move forward.


I just got back from a trip to Texas to visit my sister and her family. I was there for five days and I knew it wouldn't be a great week for my health goals. I have been doing very well with the intermittent fasting and honestly I just didn't want to worry about it too much. I decided to expand my eating window to 12 hours and that worked for me the first day or two. Then I threw all the rules out the window by my third day there and just ate and drank whatever I wanted, when I wanted. Of course I knew I was likely to put on a few pounds regardless but I was okay with that. Being a professional dieter I know my body and if I get right back on track after my trip I know I can lose those few pounds within a few days. The trick is to get right back on plan. That is often the hardest part.


It seems that you can very quickly undo all the hard work of training your body to eat at only certain times of the day. I remember very clearly feeling very hungry when I first started my smaller eating windows on IF. It seems I am right back there again. You know that hunger when you feel like you may die if you don't get food? Yeah, it's not fun or pleasant. But I know that it will pass within a few days and I will be right back into my pre-trip groove. Because I didn't lose 22 pounds to only start putting it back on now. I have more I would like to lose and I want to find a way to avoid putting weight back on during the summer months like I usually do. This plan has been working well for me and I will stick with it for now.


I got one workout in while away as well. I was supposed to do two. But I did get two days of pickleball in and I count that as activity. The trick is to now get right back on that workout train and keep moving. There is absolutely nothing I can do about my missed workouts from last week or the fact that I didn't stick to my eating plan. The only thing I can do now is move forward. Yes, it will seem even harder the first few days. Yes, I will have to push myself even harder to work out. But it will all be worth it when I see the pounds continue to come off and I like the way I look in my bathing suit.


This goes with anything you are trying to do. Are you training for a marathon? There will be times you will fall off your training schedule. You just have to force yourself to get back to it. You haven't come this far to only come this far! Working toward becoming a professional pickleball player? No, just me? There will be days that you are just off and can't play well at all. It doesn't mean it's time to throw in the towel. It just means you had a bad/off day and you try again tomorrow.


Are you trying to keep your house more organized and clean? Did you let it go for a week and it looks a mess? Then get it cleaned up now. It's only going to get worse if you don't nip it in the bud. Take a half hour to get it organized. Then later get to the cleaning. Do it in parts if that works better for you or just go all in and get it done. You know you will get that great feeling of accomplishment once it's finished. And each time you walk into the house or that room you will get that little burst of joy or seeing your hard work with a clean, organized home.


It's the same with work. Have you been slacking off and not doing the best you can? I think we all fall into that trap from time to time. But the longer you allow yourself to slack off the more likely you are to keep doing it. And once we know we can get away with it we tend to keep doing it until we are called out. And you will be called out eventually. Whether it be in an employee review or lack of promotions/raises. Sometimes you may even lose your job. We all know what we are capable of and we should always be striving to do our best. If we do less than that we are selling ourselves short and all those around us. I want you to be proud of your contributions in this life whatever they may be.


In short, just know there will be setbacks. It is inevitable. The best plan is to anticipate them and figure out how you can bounce back in the quickest way possible. If you didn't anticipate it then what is the best course of action moving forward? What advice would you give a friend? Now, take you own advice!
