How to get more discipline in your life

It's time to be a grown up. It's time to bring some discipline into your life. It's one of the things that will keep you on track to get you where you want to go in this life. It's hard though. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word "discipline"? It's probably "ugh!". Because it often evokes feelings of doing things we don't necessarily want to do. How can we make that an easier process? Break it down. Don't take on everything at once. Tackle one thing at a time. But mostly, set yourself up for success!

When we get to a point that we really want to see change in our life we typically go all in. We figure out all these things we want to do differently and we try to make all the changes at once. This is the best way to set yourself up for failure. We are creatures of habit. If most of our habits are bad we can't wake up one day and be a brand new person. We have to go slowly. We have to make our decisions count and make sure they are achievable. It's the baby steps that usually stick. The ones that we can handle. The ones that once we have down will lead us to the next step that will set us up for even more success.

Think about the big changes you want to see in your life. What do you think will be easiest to tackle first? Do that one! Because once you realize that it is up to you and you see success it will spur you to keep up the good work. Once it becomes a habit, you can move on to the next thing. But a constant stream of discipline is necessary. Discipline only works if you stick with it. So do whatever you can to make sure you stick to the plan you come up with. You are the one coming up with the plan. Take your time. The days are short but the years are long. Be committed to the long term. I know we all want to see positive changes right away but the way they truly stick, the way you will keep accountability to yourself is to tackle a little at a time. This will lead to lasting change. It's kind of like when you want to lose weight. We all know that going on a diet for 6 months but then going right back to unhealthy eating is not the way to sustain that loss. It's about habit building which will get into later this week.

Discipline is all about doing what you say you are going to do. If you don't keep your promises to yourself, how do you feel? Or are you so used to breaking them that it doesn't even bother you anymore? Yes, I've been there too. It's not a good way to live. Trust me. Life is so much more fulfilling when you do what you say you are going to do. Once you get to a place where you will feel bad for letting yourself down, you will be compelled to keep your word. How do you get to that place? By taking on a little at a time. Start with the most important changes but take on the tasks you are most likely to keep doing first. Once you see some success and realize you can truly keep your word to yourself you can take on another task to train yourself in. Before you know it, you will have a whole new daily routine that points you in the direction you want to go. But go slow. One change at a time. Make sure you have that new habit set before you tackle another one. This is the way to success.

Oh my, it's Tuesday already. What is one area of your life you need more discipline in? What are the things you need to do in order to make changes for the better? Get started. One thing, just one thing. And don't let yourself down. I know you can do it because you are a badass and of course, I'm cheering you on!
