Stop Fearing Failure

We always think of failure as a bad word. Guess what? It isn’t. It just means what you have been doing isn’t working. It’s a sign! A signal to pivot. You know what isn’t working so now you can focus on another direction that can work. We must stop believing that a failure means we should quit.

How many times have you tried something that didn’t go as planned? A lot, I’m betting. Did you take that as a sign that you shouldn’t be doing that certain thing? I hope not. If you did, please reconsider. If you tried to do something like surfing and were really bad at it that doesn’t mean it’s a sign you shouldn’t do it. Who is good at surfing the first time they try? Practically nobody! Were you an excellent driver when you first got behind the wheel? No, but you kept at it because it was important to you to know how to drive. You still aren’t perfect at it but you still keep doing it. Am I right?

This is how we should be approaching anything and everything in our lives. Do you want to start a new hobby but are worried you won’t be good at it? Of course you won’t be good at it! At first. You will get good…you just haven’t mastered it, YET. Keep at it. Embrace the fact that you will suck at first. No matter what it is! You have to learn by doing. If you fail, then you know that way doesn’t work. Find another way!

It’s so easy to quit things in this day and age. There are so many things we can spend our time on we figure we can just move on to something else. But if it’s something you really want to do, don’t let not being good (at first) stop you. You will get better. You will figure out what is the right and wrong way. And if it’s important to you, then keep at it until you figure out the right way. I also have some news you probably don’t want to hear. Once you figure out a way that works it will eventually change. There will come a point where what once worked will not longer be as effective. You will have to search and master another way. This will continue for the rest of your life. It’s called leveling up.

Have you ever worked out? Done a strength training regimen? If you had a trainer or put some research into how to do it properly you found that you are supposed to change up your routine every two weeks. Why is that? Because your muscles become accustomed to the work out and no longer respond in the most effective way. Therefore, you have to do something different that will challenge your muscles in a different way. This is how it is with everything and goal in your life. The only thing that is constant is change. I used to hate that. Mostly because it was true and I wanted to stay in my comfy ways. Now, I know in order to live my best life I have to keep leveling up. I have to keep changing things and figuring out what will work best moment to moment.

So, when you fail at something look at it as a success. You have just figured out one way on how NOT to do it. That is progress. That is a win. That is one step closer to finding the right way.
